OpenType Font Format

By Webduniya

The Open Type font format addresses the following goals:
  • broader multi-platform support
  • better support for international character sets
  • better protection for font data
  • smaller file sizes to make font distribution more efficient
  • broader support for advanced typographic control
Why Open Type?
  • OpenType fonts can include the OpenType Layout tables, which allow font creators to design better international and high-end typographic fonts.
  • Eventhough Truetype fonts can handle somewhat large number of glyphs, they can not include logics for glyph positioning, glyph substitution, etc. which can be handled only by Opentype fonts.
  • OpenType fonts may contain digital signatures which allows operating systems and browsing applications to identify the source and integrity of font files, including embedded font files obtained in web documents, before using them. Also, font developers can encode embedding restrictions in OpenType fonts, and these restrictions cannot be altered in a font signed by the developer.
Basic Architecture
OpenType includes two kinds of font compression, depending whether there's TrueType or Type 1 data inside. For TrueType, it uses Agfa's lossless font compression technology.
All the information controlling the substitution and relative positioning of glyphs during glyph processing is contained within the font itself. This information is defined in OpenType Layout (OTL) features that are, in turn, associated with specific scripts and language systems.
OpenType makes use of the basic architecture of TrueType to add support for a wide variety of glyph substitution, positioning, justification and alignment features.
When developing a website incorporating the Open Type Fonts, the two main benefits of are its cross-platform compatibility (the same font file works on Macintosh and Windows computers), and its ability to support widely expanded character sets and layout features, which provide richer linguistic support and advanced typographic control.
Thus using the Unicode Standard and the Open Type Font Formats we are now able to achieve most of our target of making a lingual Website. By having the data which can be easily used across platforms irrespective of the language and which can be searched and sorted easily.
Now before storing the data, it has to be actually entered first. Till date because of the different storing mechanisms there are different input mediums to suit them respectively.
