Social Networking: Twitter

Twitter is a social networking website that has pioneered micro-blogging. It allows users to send/receive messages - that evolved to be called as Tweets. The uniqueness of Twitter lies in its brevity (i.e.) a message can have a maximum of 140 characters.

Any person/organization can create a Twitter account and start tweeting. It is an open platform where a user is free to follow other users. However to protect the privacy, Twitter also has an option to protect a user’s tweets. By protecting a user’s tweets, the owner of the twitter account has to manually approve each and every follower they have. They can also choose to block any user from viewing the tweets.

Over a period of time, Twitter evolved with its users. If any user likes/wants to share the message contained in another user’s tweet - they choose to re-tweet it. Initially users used to prefix “RT” before a tweet to indicate that it is another user’s tweet, now a button has been provided to re-tweet.

Twitter faced criticism during its initial stages for not having a solid business model, but after search giants like Bing and Google signed a deal - Twitter started seeing revenue. Recently it launched a #New Twitter layout to further enhance its service offerings.
