Promoting literacy through same language subtitling
Hindi film songs on television may soon become a medium to teach languages to rural children who are early literate, i.e. those who can sign their names but can’t read.
A teaching tool called Same Language Subtitling developed by Brij Kothari, an associate professor at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, will make learning languages simpler by using subtitles to teach children.
SLS enables subtitling of Hindi film songs in all Indian languages and five foreign languages — Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Chinese — and Kothari says the subtitles can be used to make reading simpler for the children.
‘‘A child in a village who’s watching a song sequence on TV can read the subtitles and that way he will actually read what he sees. It would help his reading capabilities. It’s karaoke with a twist,’’ explains Kothari.
Kothari says that he is also working on a similar experiment with the radio. “I’m looking at using subtitles on radio. The songs will play with the lyrics running on a screen on the radio set,” he points out.
